ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pistol Shooting on Thursday's @ 10:00 AM
Tim Jones, Jack Patton and Paul McGinnis host a free-to-members pistol shooting drills session at the pistol bay every Thursday @ 10:00 AM weather permitting.
These are live fire drills for basic EDC/self defense - we practice drawing your pistol from your conceal carry holster, firearm & range safety, shot aiming, shot placement and accuracy tips. We shoot single and multiple paper silhouette targets and we use shot timers for feedback.
It's not a competition and, it's not basic "new shooter" either.
Contact Paul McGinnis 406-660-0378 pmc9241@hotmail.com to receive an email each week to confirm we're shooting.
Sign-In Shed and Target Materials
On Monday 08 June 2026 a new shed was placed at the range after you drive over the first cattle guard into the parking area to the right.
The purpose for this shed is to house a member sign-in log and provide free target stands, cardboard and paper targets for our members.
There will also be a club community bulletin board for posting announcements, activities, events, member items for sale, lost & found, etc.
The purpose for a sign-in log is for the club to collect and tabulate daily, weekly and monthly member use data of the range so that the club board can gain insight for future improvement planning. When you arrive at the range you and each member of your group must sign-in.
Thank you!
Wood target stand bases are being set out along the 100 yard berm on the rifle range and at the pistol bay. These are staked in place.
Please leave these where they are placed, if more are needed or in a different location please email the range officers -
Upright target frames will be available in the Sign-In Shed, cardboard and targets will also be available to attach to the frames.
Simply insert the upright frame into the base, you may need a hammer or rock to tap them into the base.
When you're done shooting please remove the paper target material and return the upright target frame to the Sign-In Shed.
Thank you!
4x4 Posts replaced at the 400, 900 and 1,000 yard Target Stands
The 4x4 wood posts and frames have been replaced at the 400, 900 and 1,000 yard rifle target stands. The existing 4 inch steel square tubes were cleaned out and re-used.
Please try to not hit the frames or the base tubes! ;^) We'll be attaching steel angle stock on the frames to better protect the wood and make it last longer.
At the 1,000 yard target (pic below at right) the old windsock post and steel gong were attached. It's not the best, we'll improve the attachments soon.
Storage Containers are in place at the Range
A couple weeks or so after the Work Day was completed back in May two (2) storage containers were placed at the range - one at the far left of the rifle benches where the old wood shed stood and, one near the pistol bay. These containers are for secure storage of club range materials - lumber, steel, targets, stands, etc.
If you're interested in securely storing your targets and stands at the range please email the club officers to arrange getting a key: info@dillonrifleandpistolclub.com
A Range Rules sign is attached to the container at the rifle bench area, the purpose for this sign is two-fold:
1. For range club liability insurance purposes these firearm safety rules, cease fire protocol and range rules are posted for member and
guest/observer awareness
2. Membership to the range club and shooting at the range includes member agreement to abide by these rules
Basic firearm safety is listed at the top:
- Treat all firearms as if they were loaded
- Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire
- Never point a firearm at anything your are not willing to destroy
- Always be aware of your target and what is beyond it
In the middle is a statement that the Dillon Rifle and Pistol Range is an unsupervised range and a Cease Fire protocol is provided to check
with other shooters at the range when you need to walk/drive downrange to place or check a target:
1. A "Cease Fire" must be agreed to and communicated to all personel on the firing line before moving downrange
2. All firearms must be clearly unloaded with actions open during a cease fire
3. No firearms or ammunition may be handled during a cease fire
4. "Range is Hot" command may be communicated only after all personel agree and are behind the firing line before commencing fire
At the bottom are general range rules:
- The entry gate must remain closed [and locked] at all times - upon entry or exit lock the gate behind you
- Alcohol and drugs are STRICTLY PROHIBITED at the range
- Shooters observing impaired individuals or improper behavior are requested to avoid confrontation and notify the Sheriff's department
and range management (email info@dillonrifleandpistolclub.com)
- Shooters under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult member
- Eye and ear protection are mandatory for all shooters and obeservers
- Incendiary targets and ammunition are strictly prohibited (i.e. Tannerite, tracer rounds, etc.)
- Steel and paper targerts ONLY are approved for range use. Household items, refuse and shatterable items are prohibited
- Armor and metal piercing ammunition is prohibited
- Firing at targets outside the range boundaries including wildlife, stray range livestock, construction equipment and solar farm structures is strictly prohibited and may result in prosecution and permanent membership revocation
- Membership cards must be fully displayed on your person while on range property and must be presented to range officials upon request
Shooting Range Work Day Complete Sunday, 03 May 2026
The Range is open today Monday, 04 May as we completed work yesterday on a few projects. Thanks for everyone's patience who didn't get to shoot yesterday! See pics below.
1. The wood shed at the end of the rifle bench line was demolished and burned, the burn pile was cleaned up and the open shed site was
leveled off.
2. The top of the 100 yd berm was cut down to better see targets at 200 yds and beyond and, the weeds were cleared off the front of the
berm.
Note: We'll be back at a later date to check all the rifle benches' site line to the 200 yd and further target stands.
MANY! MANY! MANY! THANKS!!! to Josh Yeadon, club Director and owner of the 406 Armory who donated his time and equipment to demolish the wood shed, excavate a fire-break around the burn pile, haul unburned material to the dump and clean up the burn site. Many old bad backs were saved during the work day!
THANKS!!! also to the club's Vice Chairman Jack Patton and member Craig Jeppson who are both retired firefighters for bringing the fire truck and supervising the burn in case anything got out of control.
And THANKS!!! also to the club's Treasurer & Secretary Paul McGinnis for securing the burn permit with the county!
3. We heard today the two (2) "1-trip" 10 ft x 20 ft shipping containers will be delivered this week. Stay tuned! One will replace the wood
shed and the other will be placed between the vault toilet and the pistol bay.
4. The 4x4 target stand was rebuilt at the 300 yd line and, the 4x4 target stand was repaired at the 500 yd line. We'll be
replacing/repairing the other 4x4 target stands over the next few weeks.
Note 1: We scavenged some corrugated white plastic signs from the wood shed before we burned it and used it as backerboard for
these target stands. The crossbraces at these two target stands are 35 inches top to bottom, you can use brown cardboard
or cardboard targets to replace the white plastic backerboard when needed.
Note 2: We will drop off some new target stands this week in front of the 100 yd berm.
6. Signs were placed on the blue trash barrels simply reminding everyone to pick up your trash and brass and remove it from the range or
place it in the trash barrels.
7. Signs were placed on the entry gate as a reminder to close and lock the gate upon entry and exit. This will help us manage member-only
use of the range.
FWP Club Grant Awarded Friday, 17 April 2026
Earlier this year we applied for a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) Club Grant and earlier in April we were notified we were awarded a matching grant totaling $12,500. We listed various targets, stands and a storage container in this grant.
Many thanks to our Vice Chairman Jack Patton for reviewing the requirements, addressing Q&A with FWP and making the application submission.
Board Updates Monday, 20 April 2026
1. Property and Liability insurance premiums have increased but we are covered for 2026.
2. Board of Directors and Officers were fully seated this year therefore we also purchased a Directors and Officers liability insurance
policy to safeguard the Club and these volunteers from liabilities as they serve this organization.
3. The Club Lease term was extended to 40 years and approved by the Beaverhead County Commissions last Nov 2025. Longer lease
terms are considered more favorable when applying for funding grants to various organizations.
4. We were notified Wednesday, 03 Apr 2026 that our first grant application to Friends of the NRA for $93,000 was not selected for
funding this year. This would have funded the following:
a. Completing all excavation work for the rifle range berms and the pistol bay berms
b. Repair/expand the livestock fence around the pistol bay area
c. Fund the purchase of new steel rifle range target stands
d. Fund the purchase of a shipping container for onsite storage of club materials
5. We are soliciting quotes and donations for the excavation/berm work from several companies - our goal is to complete this work asap
this year.
6. We were notified Friday, 18 Apr 2026 that we were awarded a Montana FWP matching in-kind grant to fund purchasing new steel
targets and stands and a shipping container for the pistol bay are for onsite storage of club materials.
7. We are proceeding with purchasing two (2) 10 ft x 20 ft shipping containers - one for the rifle range and one for the pistol bays for
onsite storage of club material.
8. We are proceeding with purchasing lumber for target stands for the rifle range and pistol bays as well as 4x4 posts to replace the
broken rifle range target stands in the straight line out from the rifle benches at 400 yards out to the 1,000 yards.
9. One of our Board Directors has volunteered to lead the design, material sourcing, fabrication and installation of new steel target
stands on the rifle range. He has also offered to donate some bulldozer time at the rifle range to build-up berms behind the target
stands at 200 yards out to 1,000 yards in the straight out from the rifle benches.
10. Range entrance and safety rules signs are ordered and will be installed soon. Further range safety signage is planned.
